Writing: A Challenging Journey
Writing: A Challenging Journey
I can't imagine completing this Substack project without the support and inspiration from others. For me, writing is a formidable challenge. The only way I find to navigate the complexities of this craft is to envision you sitting beside me, sharing this journey.
As we dive into this Introduction—albeit a bit late since I’m already a month in—I believe it’s the perfect moment to share the personality of my newsletter and offer an honest glimpse of what to expect in the coming months. This is also my way of committing to a clear direction, as I often find myself tempted to wander down distracting paths.
On my website, trulytimothy.com, I’ve described my passions: drawing, paper-based work, and photography. I’m sticking with this focus.
At present, I am focused on three primary projects: Challenging Identity, The Simplicity Series, and First Steps into Alternative Photographic Processes. I am especially fascinated by the role of colour in our lives. Colour is perhaps the most powerful tool at an artist's disposal. It affects our emotions beyond thought and can convey any mood. Colour serves as a driving force behind my 35mm photography. I believe that if I succeed on my journey into colour, it could generate a ripple effect that extends far beyond my own work, and the potential of this prospect truly excites me.
I find the Substack rolling note format captivating, as it serves as a dynamic version of a contact sheet. It has infused my daily postings of 35mm photographs with life and significance. At first, I was unsure how to begin, but I took action, trusting that it would guide me toward something meaningful—and it truly has. My perspective on the world is evolving in remarkable ways.
Do I have everything that I need? Yes, almost certainly. If I fall short, there is always a way. There is joy in the spontaneous act of creation. I don't stick to a set plan or follow a strict shot list. I guess you could say I'm more of a wanderer, finding beauty in the unexpected.
One new discovery is that each roll of film has its own personality and a stepping stone to the next. This is my river concept kicking in again - go with the flow, wherever a river starts it flows to the sea. Rather than wishing for something beyond my reach, there is joy in discovering the unique charms of what I have. This approach has pushed me to adapt my techniques and has opened up opportunities to experiment with new styles and vibes. Sometimes, working within a tight budget can lead to delightful surprises. I find joy in the unpredictability and authenticity in what each opportunity offers. I stumbled upon this realisation quite by accident, and it’s been a joyful journey.
This playful exploration also helps me sharpen my skills. Talking photography now, but the same applies to drawing, I pay more attention to light, composition, and framing—every shot is a new adventure. Instead of having endless options, I’m driven to find fresh perspectives and angles I might have missed otherwise.
At the end of the day, it’s the story behind the artwork that truly counts. It’s a gentle reminder that you don’t need endless resources to create something beautiful—just a passion for creating and an open mind to all the possibilities. And always remember, light will find its way, even in the darkest of places.
